TL;DR

The game site for IOTA Heroes is shutting down on the 15th of May due to loss of access to our indexing solution. Thank you for an incredible journey ❤️

Time to say goodbye

It’s been about a year since the final update. During that time, we’ve kept the game available and running, even as we’ve seen declining interest in EVM within the IOTA ecosystem.

I would have gladly kept the game online as a fond memory—so you could revisit your heroes and impressive inventories—but we’ve recently learned that the IF has terminated the ecosystem coverage program for Goldsky, which hosts our subgraphs (the indexing layer critical to keeping the game running).

While we do have the option to take over the costs ourselves, we simply don’t have the funds to cover them. Given the current state of things, it also feels like the right time to bring the game to a close.

We never know what the future holds, I have grown extremely fond of Fortuvia and its inhabitants, so it's not impossible that we could see a resurgence at some point, it might however be something completely different and might be hosted somewhere else.

We also recently wrapped up the legal entities for IOTA Heroes, which was quite a battle with accounting and taxes—but at least we did it the right way.

What about the heroes and items?

We're pausing the adventure, reforging and researching contracts. Due to the nature of the infrastructure, the contracts themselves will continue to live on the EVM and remain open for anyone to interact with. You should still be able to view your heroes and items on the IOTA EVM Explorer. Your gold will remain tradable on MagicSea, however with this change no more gold is planned to be minted.

We would have loved to keep the game website online so you could continue looking back at your heroes, but the indexing layer is crucial for the site to function, and supporting even a limited version without subgraphs would require a significant amount of effort.

If we ever decide to continue building upon Fortuvia in the future—whether on IOTA or elsewhere—we’ll definitely let you know through the Discord server and on X.

A personal note from Christian (Crelde):

It is with a very heavy heart that I write this blog post. This game has taken up an immense amount of my time over the past several years. I set out with the goal of giving the IOTA ecosystem something fun to do on the EVM, and I’d like to believe I accomplished just that.

Financially, this ended up being a noticeable loss for me. But in return, I’ve gained so many incredible memories with the community—and experienced the excitement of releasing feature after feature. There’s a special joy in building something from the ground up and seeing people engage with it, especially at the scale we reached within the IOTA ecosystem.

One of my personal highlights was before ShimmerEVM even went live, when I hosted the first PvP tournament on Discord with many of you—the video is still up! The second PvP tournament was amazing as well, but somehow I forgot to hit record… so you’ll just have to remember it if you were there.

I will continue to check our discord server, so feel free to stay around!

Finally, I want to personally thank each and every one of you for being part of IOTA Heroes. And remember: everything will be alright—as long as you have your turtle companion by your side. 🐢
